Here are some Web sites you can visit for news about Gulf War II: news.Google.com -- The search engine's ballyhooed news site uses a computer to select its stories, which means a lot of repetition and some odd choices (press releases often appear as news stories), but it's searchable and linked to hundreds of news sources. www.WashingtonPost.com, www.LATimes.com, www.CSMonitor.com, www.NYTimes.com, www.NYPost.com, online.WSJ.com www.Boston.com/Globe, www.ChicagoTribune.com, www.WashingtonTimes.com -- Web sites maintained by some of the nation's biggest and most influential newspapers. Some make you to fill out a registration form for access, and The Wall Street Journal site requires a paid subscription. www.Reuters.com -- The European version of The Associated Press offers a plethora of war news from a different perspective than U.S.-based media outlets. Reuters also is putting its raw video feeds from Iraq on the Web. Find them at reuters.feedroom.com. www.Independent.co.uk, news.Telegraph.co.uk, www.Guardian.co.uk, www.TimesOnline.co.uk -- Web sites from some of England's biggest newspapers, which have covered the war on terrorism and the Iraq crisis extensively. The press is much livelier there, with papers taking a distinct political slant in their news pages. www.CNN.com, ABCNews.go.com, news.BBC.co.uk, www.MSNBC.com, www.CBSNews.com, www.NPR.org, www.FoxNews.com -- Web sites maintained by the major American TV news operations, National Public Radio and the British Broadcasting Co. All are rich with content and include video and audio feeds so you can check out the news at your leisure. www.dw-world.de/english -- English-language Web site of Deutsche Welle, the large German TV network. www.Slate.com -- This online magazine is an invaluable source of crisp, intelligent news and opinion about the Iraq crisis. The writing rivals what you find in most print magazines, and the site is updated daily. Corporate owner Microsoft seems to be taking a hands-off approach, for now. www.Instapundit.com -- One of the best Web logs in the business. Run by law professor Glenn Reynolds, Instapundit collects links from dozens of news sources and online commentators. While it has a prowar bent, Instapundit is a good source of information and commentary. www.TalkingPointsMemo.com -- This Web log run by writer Joshua Micah Marshall is a liberal antidote to conservative talk radio, as well as a sensible alternative to leftwing Web sites that seem consumed with Bush-bashing and conspiracy theories. www.NationalReview.com/TheCorner/TheCorner.asp -- If you are looking for a conservative perspective on the war and terrorism, this Web log maintained by National Review writers is a great source. Even if you don't agree with them, the tone is civilized and intelligent. www.CounterPunch.com -- On the other hand, CounterPunch is a cup that runneth over with news and opinions from the left. Overseen by writers Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair, the site includes opinion columns from around the world that challenge the status quo. www.Fark.com -- Based in Kentucky, Fark is a constantly updated collection of offbeat links to the good, the bad and the vulgar from the World Wide Web. Anything and everything, from breaking news to online porn to the latest conspiracy theories, can be found here. www.Metafilter.com -- Maintained by a community of ordinary Web users, Metafilter is a collection of interesting links and provocative commentary from around the Internet. It's a great place to take the pulse of the online world. www.Poynter.org/Romenesko -- If you want to know what the people who run the nation's newspapers and TV news outlets are talking about, this is the place to go. Each day, media junkie Jim Romenesko searches dozens of Web sites to collect interesting news, gossip and opinion about the media. www.Snopes.com -- If we ever needed a site like this, it's now. Created as a genial effort to debunk urban legends about stolen kidneys and spider eggs in bubble gum, this site has gone beyond the call of duty to deflate Internet rumors and misinformation about terrorism and war. www.AlJazeera.net -- the Web site for the ''Arab CNN'' isn't in English, but if you can read Arabic, it's worth a look to see how many people in the world are getting their news about Iraq. www.ArabicNews.com -- This site collects stories from newspapers and news services from around the Arab world. It is unclear who runs the site or where it is based, although its advertising banners suggest that it emanates from the U.S. www.Debka.com -- If you scare easily, do not go to this Web site, purportedly run by former Israeli intelligence operatives who claim to have access to high-level information on terrorism and the military. Some of the stuff here about suitcase nukes and smallpox-infected terrorists will make your hair curl. www.DefenseLink.mil -- The official Web site of the U.S. Department of Defense. All Rumsfeld, all the time! ---Thomas Nord, CJ, deserves our thanks for this.
